On Friday, York welcomed its largest class of first-year students when they arrived on campus for move-in day. Approximately 1225 first-time freshmen were expected to arrive on campus this fall. New this year, the Alumni Office hosted two hospitality tents in the Manor Complex and Penn/Beard Complex during Move-In Day. All new Spartans and their families were invited to stop by the tents and receive a complimentary stadium cup filled with water or sweet tea.

Thank you to all alumni, current students and staff who volunteered at the tents and helped introduce the new students to the Spartan Way of Life.

Starting this academic year, a heavy emphasis will be placed on keeping our young alumni connected and engaged through a variety of strategic programming. On Tuesday, we invited young alumni who demonstrated enthusiasm and leadership during their time on campus to serve on our Baltimore/Susquehanna Young Alumni Executive Committee. The committee will meet 4 times a year and help plan events for alumni in the Baltimore and Susquehanna Valley areas. Our first introductory meeting went very well and we have 20 committee members that will help in the planning and execution of potential events and special young alumni programming such as:

Next up....Sports with Matt Leon Login to comment

Tuesday, June 29 2010 12:00:00 AM

Did you ever listen to the radio on your way to work or in your house and wonder, who is the voice behind your favorite morning show or sportscast? From the minute I stepped foot in the KYW news office, I knew Matt Leon '96 would prove to be a very interesting and very active shadowing assignment for SpartaBlog. Matt is a sports anchor for KYW News Radio 1060, which is based out of Philadelphia, PA. Matt has an impressive radio resume, which includes serving as a DJ in Hanover and as a sports director for stations in State College and in Missouri. Matt began his career at KYW in March 2002 as a part-time employee for seven years; he recently transitioned to a full-time anchor.

During my assignment, I quickly saw how Matt was constantly 'on the go.' His position requires a lot of writing and researching in order to be fully prepared for his sportscasts. Even though, he will write three different casts, they will be rotated and updated throughout the day in order to keep everything fresh. Matt goes on the air every 15 min and 45 min on the hour starting from 10:15AM-3:45PM. Watching Matt in action was very similar to watching a tennis match....back and forth, back and forth. Matt was at his desk looking up scores, researching stats/scores, player information, followed by writing his sportscast and then dashing to the studio to go live on the air. Matt worked at an incredibly high speed with little stress/panic, (I think I was more nervous than he was). On the particular day I was there, Matt was covering everything from the World Cup, US Open, baseball and the 76ers trade, which was a recent development that afternoon. In addition to his reporting, Matt also participates in "Reporters Round-Up." These sessions require less reporting, but rather more discussion with the news anchor on the air. This is also an opportunity to be creative and focus on topics that may not be covered or featured as much as other stories in his sportscasts. In today's particular round up, the hot topic was the recent 76ers trade. To view a video clip on Matt in action, click here. One of Matt's favorite moments as a KYW anchor took place last fall when the Phillies won against the Dodgers during Game 4 of the National League Championships. Another highlight included doing a player feature of Ben Davis, pitcher for the Camden Riversharks. In addition to baseball, Matt has attended numerous Eagles, Flyers and the men's minor league soccer games.

During his time as a student, Matt majored in mass communications and served as the Sports Director for the college radio station, WVYC. Matt even spent time completing play-by-play for the York College Baseball Team. This gave him excellent practice because Matt spent five years as the radio play-by play voice for the University of Pennsylvania Football Team. In 2008, he was named play-by-play announcer for Philadelphia University Men's and Women's Basketball Teams. Matt said even before his involvement with WVYC on campus, radio was something he knew he always wanted to do. Matt spoke highly on his two favorite communication professors, Professor Briggs and Dr. Hall who proved to be very influential for him.

In March 2010, Matt published a book, Under Your Nose: Great Philadelphia Sports Stories You've Never Heard. The book, as described on Amazon: You know all about the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers - not to mention Big 5 men's basketball. But the Philadelphia area is chock full of other great sports stories and careers that have gone virtually unnoticed. Until now. "Under Your Nose" shines the spotlight on incredible tales that will help remind you why you became a sports fan in the first place. From football to fencing, it's all in here. These stories will leave you wondering how you never heard them before . . especially considering they have been "Under Your Nose" the whole time!

Matt wrote about 75% of his stories and interviews before he even looked for a publisher. The book includes over 18 stories and captures over 80-90 personal interviews.  The past few weeks, Matt has been traveling throughout the Delaware Valley and New Jersey areas to complete book signings. Even later that night, Matt would be traveling to the Willow Grove Mall for a book signing.

At the end of the day after Matt's last on-air sportscast, I asked what advice he would give to incoming and current students interested in radio. He said, "There are a lot of jobs out there; however, they may be different than what you are interested in doing. You have to be open and versatile because the opportunities may not be exactly what you had planned on. Always be flexible because media is constantly changing and you need to be prepared to change with it."

Fun Facts about Matt Leon '96
a. Matt's favorite part of the job is getting to tell interesting stories and learn new things. He is always surprised at the things he discovers in his position on a day to day basis.
b. Matt feels like classes with Briggs and Hall really helped him understand what he was in for in this business. Not just from a 'nuts and bolts standpoint, but also from a networking standpoint.
c. Matt currently lives in Clayton, NJ.

NYC Experience Walking Tour Login to comment

On Saturday, a group of 30 York College Alumni and friends set out to discover the historic world of downtown Manhattan on a NYC Walking Tour led by licensed NYC Tour Guide Hank Orenstein. Starting at the former United States Customs House Building (now the Smithsonian Indian Museum), our guide took us on an adventure of the Financial District, Lower East Side, China Town, and the West Village. From the pew where George Washington sat (in St. Paul's Chapel) to Columbus Park (where tap dancing originated), we learned facts and stories that opened our eyes to a world where a Starbucks didn't occupy every other corner. Some of the other sites included: the grave of Alexander Hamilton, NY Stock Exchange, the five points, the first planned tenements in China Town (7 story walkups!) and the SoHo Cast Iron district. Ending at the newly constructed Highline Park, our group spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon laughing and getting to know a NYC much different from the one we know today!

YCP Alumni and A Day of History Login to comment

Monday, June 07 2010 12:00:00 AM

Submitted by Bruce Wall, Director of Alumni Relations

On Saturday, Dr. Mark Snell, ’77, led a group of 45 alumni and guests on a War Memorial Tour in Washington DC. This is Dr. Snell’s fourth alumni trip in the past two years to either World War II or Civil War sites within a days’ trip of campus. Dr. Philip Avillo, recently retired Professor of History at YCP, joined the group on this trip to add his particular expertise and experience on Vietnam.

The tour included the World War II Memorial, the Marine Corps Memorial, the Memorials dedicated to the Korean and Vietnamese Wars, and Arlington National Cemetery. During each stop, Dr. Snell and/or Dr. Avillo talked about the memorial itself, and what the design represents, and provided some background on the conflicts commemorated by the memorials. Both Dr. Snell and Dr. Avillo are veterans, and provided personal experiences and anecdotes from their own military service.

The trip was both a fascinating history lesson and a solemn reminder of the many sacrifices that so many American soldiers and sailors have made on behalf of this country.  On several occasions during our visit to the World War II Memorial, Dr. Snell engaged in impromptu conversations with World War II veterans visiting the memorial, who added their own poignant memories to the presentation. At the Marine Corps Memorial, the group witnessed the commissioning ceremony of a new Marine lieutenant, and at Arlington Cemetery, the group watched the changing of the guard ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Dr. Snell will again offer alumni a Civil War tour in the fall, and details of the upcoming trip will be available soon.

Meet Andrea Miller '05 Login to comment

Tuesday, June 01 2010 12:00:00 AM

By: Kate Jones, Alumni Office Intern

Greetings! I am back to tell you about my most recent alumni interview, Andrea Miller ‘05.

Andrea is the Assistant Counsel for the Acquisition Integrity Office, Department of the Navy Office of the General Counsel. The majority of her time is spent working with procurement fraud and contracting out with government. Procurement fraud includes, but is not limited to, cost/labor mischarging, defective pricing, defective parts, price fixing and bid rigging and product substitution.

For example, if Company A defrauded the government by sending an invoice for work they didn’t complete, the NCIS (Navy Criminal investigative Service) pushes the case to the Department of Justice or administrative action is taken. After an intense investigation, Company A is informed that they can no longer work with the government or they are placed on suspension.

Although Andrea doesn’t work directly with the President himself, she works very closely with the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus.  Ray Mabus has a keen interest in what Andrea and her office partake in; he is all about legal justification and stresses that things are not always cut and dry answers. It was very evident through our interview that Andrea loves her job and she is an inspiration to me how she spoke about it. I hope that I am as lucky and able to find a profession that makes me feel that accomplished. Andrea loves her job for more than one reason, her new element is the new health and wellness policy that was passed. The Department of Defense allows the civilians three hours during the week to partake in physical activity. Not only is this activity needed to destress, but also a fun way to bond with people that you work with. Additional reasons include great benefits, health, retirement and a compressed work schedule.

Andrea majored in political science with a double minor in sociology and philosophy at York College and graduated from Dickinson School of Law in 2009. Andrea felt that she took away great critical thinking skills and research techniques from York. YCP also prepared her to be a professional because of the activities she took part in on campus, such as Student Senate. “We had to be professional, faculty expected it!” Miller said.  After discovering that we had something in common, being a member of Senate, I was very interested in knowing what she believed set her apart from other applicants for her present job. Andrea said that her semi-prestigious internships in law school, being involved in numerous activities, such as De Phi E, Student Senate President, York Ambassador, volunteering at York College  and just showing a great deal of drive in her interviews helped her separate herself from other applicants.

Fun Facts about Andrea…

a.    Her advice to the incoming class of new students is to get involved as much as possible. “This is the defining aspect of your college career. Don’t just rely on book smarts; it is the practical stuff, the hands on ability that really get you somewhere. Social skills, use them don’t lose them.”

b.    When I asked what she would consider her greatest accomplishment, she responded with, “Not to sound corny, but making my parents proud, they didn’t go to college and I was the first to go to Grad School.”

c.    Andrea has served on the Alumni Board Directors for the past five years.

Baseball, fun and lots of rain! Login to comment

Monday, May 24 2010 09:46:09 AM

On Saturday, the alumni office hosted Alumni Day with the DC Nationals.  The evening started out great with a pre-game reception at Red Porch.  The food was delicious and the view of the game from our reception area was amazing.  All was well until it started to rain buckets!  However, our fearless alumni stayed strong and took cover in a section closer to the field.  Thank you to all alumni who came out and braved the rain!  Good job to the DC Nationals who beat the Orioles 7-6.
