He Shoots, He Scores! Login to comment

He shoots, he scores! This proved to be the common theme during Alumni Night with the Flyers on October 30th as the Philadelphia Flyers crushed the New York Islanders 6-1. Alumni Night over the past years has included everything from a private reception prior to the game in the Hall of Fame room, a specific section for our alumni group, tickets that included a credit towards food at the concession stands, raffle prizes from the Flyers and much more! All of our events with the Flyers always go incredibly well, and all alumni and guests in attendance always walk away with fond memories. Our events with the Flyers would not have been so successful without all of the hard work behind the scenes by Flyers account executive and YCP alum, Mike Andrews.

Mike Andrews graduated from YCP in 2003 with a degree in sports management. As an account executive, Mike is responsible for developing relationships and working closely with businesses, colleges, high schools, churches, non profit groups and other organizations to set up group outings, putting together season ticket packages, tailoring specific packages for customers, planning receptions and overall, making sure all events run smoothly for his clients. Before he started his career with the Flyers in February 2009, Mike worked for the Philadelphia 76ers since 2005.

Although his day to day routine is never the same and every experience for him is very different, he thoroughly enjoys what he does. When I asked, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years, even 10 years?" He responded without missing a beat, "Working within the same organization." He hopes to one day work directly with the team, possibly in the PR field. He said that working for the Flyers has always been his dream, and he doesn't see himself going anywhere else.

One of his memorable moments working for the Flyers includes their Stanley cup finals run last season. In the second round, the Flyers came back to win the series after losing three straight games to the Boston Bruins. Mike enjoyed being a part of this history and surrounded by the excitement of the team and fans.

Mike credits his small class sizes and individual attention at YCP to help get him where he is today. He also speaks highly of the sports management department and his professors, especially Professor Massa, which helped prepare him professionally for his current career path. He also felt the required internship credits helped pave the path and map out his career plan. As a student, Mike interned with the Hershey Bears and the Giant Center. Mike would advise any current student, "Don't be afraid to embrace a personal connection with a professor or advisor. Open dialogue can help you with planning and making good use of time as a student in this program."

It was an absolute pleasure working with Mike to plan out alumni events and our office looks forward to many more successful events with the Flyers! To read the Alumni Night with the Philadelphia Flyers 2010 blog, click here.

Dinner with 12 Spartans (November) Login to comment

The second Dinner with 12 Spartans dinner series that took place this week, proved to be a wonderful evening. Students, alumni and faculty gathered together for a relaxed and fun dinner. The evening was filled with good company, friendly conversation and delicious food!

Students shared their experiences as a student today, while alumni shared their fond (and embarrassing) stories of their days as a York College student. Alumni gave helpful tips on job searching, interviewing and how to “land that job” after graduation. Students were able to establish new connections with alumni and faculty and walk away from the dinner with very helpful career advice. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

Guests were strangers to each other at first, but ended the evening with 11 new Spartan friends.

On Monday, over 25 biology seniors gathered to participate in Success After College: Biology Series. Success after College featured five panelists who have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biological science from York College. Biology seniors had the opportunity to listen as each panelist provided advice on job searching, applying to graduate school and what to expect, interviewing skills, and their experiences at York College. The panelists suggested to “never give up” searching for a job, “keep sending your resume,” and to check out for helpful suggestions in specific fields. All panelists agreed that their education at York College prepared them to succeed in their fields and helped them make a decision to continue their education. All seniors walked away with more knowledge about how to become “successful after college.”
