He shoots, he scores! This proved to be the common theme during Alumni Night with the Flyers on October 30th as the Philadelphia Flyers crushed the New York Islanders 6-1. Alumni Night over the past years has included everything from a private reception prior to the game in the Hall of Fame room, a specific section for our alumni group, tickets that included a credit towards food at the concession stands, raffle prizes from the Flyers and much more! All of our events with the Flyers always go incredibly well, and all alumni and guests in attendance always walk away with fond memories. Our events with the Flyers would not have been so successful without all of the hard work behind the scenes by Flyers account executive and YCP alum, Mike Andrews.
Mike Andrews graduated from YCP in 2003 with a degree in sports management. As an account executive, Mike is responsible for developing relationships and working closely with businesses, colleges, high schools, churches, non profit groups and other organizations to set up group outings, putting together season ticket packages, tailoring specific packages for customers, planning receptions and overall, making sure all events run smoothly for his clients. Before he started his career with the Flyers in February 2009, Mike worked for the Philadelphia 76ers since 2005.
Although his day to day routine is never the same and every experience for him is very different, he thoroughly enjoys what he does. When I asked, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years, even 10 years?" He responded without missing a beat, "Working within the same organization." He hopes to one day work directly with the team, possibly in the PR field. He said that working for the Flyers has always been his dream, and he doesn't see himself going anywhere else.
One of his memorable moments working for the Flyers includes their Stanley cup finals run last season. In the second round, the Flyers came back to win the series after losing three straight games to the Boston Bruins. Mike enjoyed being a part of this history and surrounded by the excitement of the team and fans.
Mike credits his small class sizes and individual attention at YCP to help get him where he is today. He also speaks highly of the sports management department and his professors, especially Professor Massa, which helped prepare him professionally for his current career path. He also felt the required internship credits helped pave the path and map out his career plan. As a student, Mike interned with the Hershey Bears and the Giant Center. Mike would advise any current student, "Don't be afraid to embrace a personal connection with a professor or advisor. Open dialogue can help you with planning and making good use of time as a student in this program."
It was an absolute pleasure working with Mike to plan out alumni events and our office looks forward to many more successful events with the Flyers! To read the Alumni Night with the Philadelphia Flyers 2010 blog, click here.
